Stateful Firewalls, Intrusion Detection and Hardware Security
As connected vehicles interact with cellular networks, charging infrastructure, and cloud backends, attack surfaces multiply exponentially. SDVShield explores hardware-isolated security enclaves, in-vehicle firewalls, and cryptographic rate-limiting.

Defense-in-Depth for Internal Ethernet and Controller Area Networks
Perimeter security is insufficient when compromised infotainment units can inject malicious CAN frames. Automotive security architects must implement stateful firewalls, deep payload inspection, and cryptographically verified message authentication.
Core Engineering Areas
- Automotive Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): CAN-FD and Ethernet Deep Packet Inspection — Legacy automotive buses lack authentication: any compromised ECU can inject spoofed torque messages or flood the arbitration bus. Automotive Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) operate at wire speed, monitoring inter-arrival timing intervals, message sequence counters, and payload entropies. Suspicious events are logged to the in-vehicle Security Event Manager (SEvM) and reported to the cloud VSOC.
- Hardware Security Modules (HSM): EVITA Full and Secure Hardware Extensions (SHE) — Architecture of on-die cryptographic co-processors with isolated flash, dedicated crypto accelerators (AES-256, ECC, SHA-3), and tamper-resistant master key storage.
- In-Vehicle Network Firewalls: Stateful SOME/IP and DDS Traffic Inspection — Modern zonal architectures route gigabit Ethernet between cockpit, telematics, and chassis domains. A compromised Android infotainment system must never be capable of sending service requests to brake actuators. Stateful in-vehicle firewalls enforce Layer 3-7 inspection, validating SOME/IP method IDs, DDS topic names, and RPC client identities against a cryptographic whitelist.
